He also seems to break Papyrus’ left arm. He uses two vines to tie up everyone besides Papyrus, who he ties up in four vines.Įven though Asgore, Toriel, and Undyne are taller, he still uses only two vines on them. For now, I’ll ponder why Papyrus-senpai doesn’t love me, and why that makes Undertale such a damn good game. The extra vines theory comes from when Flowey ties up the main cast just before Asriel’s battle. This brings in a larger topic of videogames and art, with art being a reflection of life, but I won’t go into that.

Not just a series of inputs that reward the player, but an experience. Undertale shows the immense potential in video games and what they could be. It’s what I love about Undertale and video games in general. It buries itself in your brain and makes you think and feel. It takes your expectations and assumptions from other video games and throws them out the window. You, as the character, can essentially conquer any relationship you want, but not in Undertale. It’s always worked as such: find a character you like, talk to them enough, get their special cutscene, move on to the next partner. For the first time in a video game, I was rejected not because I said the wrong thing, but because the NPC simply didn’t feel the same way for me. It’s ridiculous that a computer generated skeleton make me think like this. I wondered what he would’ve liked instead. After leaving the date, I found myself calling him more often (you have a cell phone in the game). Nothing I could do would’ve changed Papyrus’s reaction to our date, and this has stuck with me since. But even with sexuality incorporated, simply change your character to the desired gender/race and you can romance them. Dragon Age: Inquisition recently attempted to incorporate sexuality into their game, another facet of their dating system. Dialogue trees aside, you can romance any character if you try hard enough. In this traditional dating system, you, as the player, are the penultimate male/female. Basically, if you pressure an NPC enough, they’ll fall for you. Say the right phrases, pay attention to them, and finally go in for the romantic kill. These all boil down to the same mechanics. Games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Persona 4 all have dating aspects where the player is expected to find a significant other. Think back to any game with a dating aspect to it. Had I ever been flat out rejected by a videogame character? And for personal emotional reasons on top of that? He apologizes and asks to stay friends.Īfter reading this, I just sat there for a moment thinking. Actually, he never had romantic feelings in the first place. He then goes on a long rant about how he likes you, but just as a friend. If you successfully max Papyrus’s ‘dating meter’ you win, as one might expect. I was laughing throughout the entire date and just having a good time exploring the game itself, that is, until the end of the date. You go to his house and eventually initiate a date, which brings up a battle-like screen where you fight Papyrus with your ‘dating abilities’. Him being a skeleton aside, romancing Papyrus was actually a ton of fun. Well, Undertale gives you a chance to romance this weird skeleton creature. Notice a pattern in how I’m describing him? It sounds like I’m talking about a person I’m interested in. He’s goofy, friendly, and actually adorable. He loves spaghetti and puns, and has a comically large ego. With each trap, Papyrus grows more desperate to trip you up, but utterly fails.

Papyrus is a skeleton who loves tricking humans into puzzles. Papyrus is one of the NPCs in the game, being one of the first NPCs you meet after the tutorial section of the game. That being said, Undertale provided me with one of the most emotionally unique video game experiences as of late, and it all has to do with a cheesy, pun-making skeleton named Papyrus. In a sense, I let myself get attached to character’s and games themselves. If a game is good, I love getting emotionally tied to it. I should preface what I’m about to say with this: I like to get invested in games. That being said, ***SPOILERS TO FOLLOW*** I would go more in deapth, but Undertale is such a unique game that I’d rather only spoil the small portion of the game this article will cover. The battle system is familiar to JRPGs of old and I don’t think I’ve laughed out loud this much sitting alone in my room playing a videogame. Seeing it’s incredible review scores, I decided to try my luck at the game.Īn hour into Undertale, and I’m in love. Let’s talk about Undertale, that weird Earthbound-esque game that came out a few weeks back.
